Our 2018 Estate Syrah reflects the unique terroir of Block 8 at Double River Vineyard while the use of modest French oak further amplifies the character of this Syrah. The “Geneva Double Curtain” training form divides this canopy in half, allowing for more sunlight and better management in the fruit zone. We fermented 50% of this Syrah on the stems to provide balance, structure and personality, while retaining freshness and verve in the bottle. The wine spent 12 months on the lees with no racking performed, to minimize oxidation and to ensure depth and complexity. It was bottled in the late summer of 2019 to capture the vibrant and expressive nuances that were showcased in barrel during blending.
This savory Syrah expresses distinct earthy nuances of cedar, leather and cured meats, while hints of red fruit and herbal notes are also on forefront of the bouquet. A note of green olive and leafy characteristics present a subtle yet intriguing accent behind the fruit, giving this Syrah some “funk.” As it breathes, dark and ripe berry fruits will come to life, with fine notes of wet stone adding a touch of minerality to the alluring aroma. The pleasant mid-palate possesses fine acidity and modest tannin, and make this wine very approachable. More enhanced flavors will be present when this Syrah is paired with grilled chicken kabobs, leg of lamb or pork tenderloin.
